art history

Although Art History has no Art prerequisites, it is open to upper class students only. The class is based on Janson’s History of Art text, slides and teacher lectures. Students who are interested in Art, Aesthetics, World Cultures and History benefit greatly from this class.

This is the text book for the course. Written by H. W. Janson and Anthony F. Janson, it is designed with High School students in mind. The readability of the text is from 10th through 12th grade level.  Students keep the book at home and are not required to bring them to class.

The Art Department has a large collection of masterworks in digital and 35mm slides for daily use in class. Mr. Marrero distributes a copy of the digital slide archive to each student enrolled in the class.  The student keep the archive stored on CD for use in their studies at home.  Students attend two field trips each year.  One field trip visits the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the other visits the Whitney Museum of American Art.

The class operates primarily in a slide lecture / discussion format with the use of PowerPoint presentations.  Homework reading assignments are given on a weekly basis and are reviewed regularly.
