Summer Explorations in Art – For Seniors Only!

These activities are designed to acquaint the prospective Senior IB Art/Design student with their potential creative interests and provide momentum leading into the studio experience beginning in September.

The first major grade of the first quarter in September will be based on two following requirements –

 1.   A 9”X12” ( or 8 ½”  x 11") hardcover sketchbook available at bookstores.

The journal should contain the 3 C’s – Collecting, Critiquing, Creating -

q 1/3 - Photos, Xeroxes of artwork by other artists that inspires or interests you

q 1/3 - Your reactions to that artwork that follows the classic model of a meaningful critique (gut reaction, description, analysis, interpretation, and judgement) and observations of the social/historical context of the work

q 1/3 - Development of your ideas through sketches, paintings, photographs

A Minimum of 10 pages, front and back, of the

journal should be filled – total 20 sides of paper

 2. One major project (for SL IB and AP students), or three major projects (for HL IB) that could be in one of the following forms:

q A series (at least 3) of fully realized, developed drawings or,

q An oil or acrylic painting that has an strong composition and color sense or,

q       A series of small sculptures or one large sculpture

Both of these requirements will count as a double grade for the first quarter of the school year.  Begin early in the summer to avoid snowballing.

This work is due Friday, September 5, 2008, the last day of the first week of school.  Please bring your journal and your major project with you to hang in the lobby.  Paintings should have screw eyes and wire, ready to be hung.  Please paint the sides of the canvas with black or a unifying color.
