Mendham’s Red Bandana Game Honors the Legacy of 9/11 Heroes

On September 10, 2026, the Mendham Chester community came together for Mendham High School’s annual Red Bandana football game, a meaningful tradition that honors the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and recognizes the courage, sacrifice, and selflessness demonstrated by first responders and everyday citizens that day.

This year’s game marked the 25th anniversary of 9/11 and served as a powerful reminder of the importance of remembering those who put the lives of others before their own. Students, athletes, families, first responders, and community members gathered wearing red bandanas to honor the legacy of Welles Crowther and the many others whose actions reflected extraordinary courage.

Student journalist Abigail Conover captured the significance of this tradition and explored the history behind the Red Bandana game, the legacy of Welles Crowther, and the impact this annual event continues to have on the Mendham Chester community.
